Heart racing when your turn comes in the daily? The format never changes: yesterday, today, blockers. Learn these skeleton phrases and you'll never freeze at 9 a.m. again.
Key phrases
- Yesterday I finished the login page.The "yesterday" part: "Yesterday I…" + a past verb (finished, fixed, reviewed).
- Today I'm working on the API integration.The "today" part: "Today I'm working on…" + your task.
- I'm blocked — I'm waiting for the designs."Blocked" is THE standup word. Name the blocker and what you're waiting for.
- No blockers on my side.Nothing blocking you? This closes your turn in two seconds.
- I'll pick up the next ticket."Pick up" = take a task from the board.
- Can we take this offline?Means "let's discuss it after the meeting" — keeps the standup short.
- Quick question before we wrap up."Wrap up" = finish. Squeeze in a question before the end.
Tip: The daily has a fixed skeleton: "Yesterday… Today… No blockers." Three sentences, ten seconds — practice it out loud once and the scariest meeting of the day becomes routine.
