From the moment you sit down to paying the bill: here are the English phrases to order food, ask about the menu, and get the check — then practice them out loud with the tutor.

Key phrases

A table for two, please.
Ask for a table when you arrive — just change the number.
Can we see the menu, please?
"Menu" is the food list; for drinks, ask for "the drinks menu."
I'll have the grilled chicken.
The most natural way to order your dish. "I'll have" = "I will have."
What do you recommend?
Can't decide? Let the waiter suggest the house favorites.
Could we get some water, please?
"Still" water has no bubbles; "sparkling" does. "Could" sounds extra polite.
Can we get the bill, please?
"The bill" is British; in the US, ask for "the check."
Is the tip included?
"Tip" is the extra money for service — usually 15–20% in the US.

Tip: To call the waiter, don't snap your fingers or wave your arms. The polite way is a little eye contact and a soft "Excuse me..." as they come near.
