Airport English: Check-in and Boarding

Flying when you're not confident in your English is stressful. Here are the phrases you'll hear and say at check-in, security, and the boarding gate — practice them out loud before your trip.

Key phrases

I'm checking in for my flight to New York.
Say this at the airline counter to start check-in.
I have one bag to check in.
For luggage that goes in the hold. Your hand luggage is a "carry-on."
Can I have a window seat, please?
"Window seat" or "aisle seat" — ask for the one you prefer.
Where is the security checkpoint?
The X-ray area. The "gate" is where your plane leaves from.
Do I need to take off my shoes?
A common question at security. "Take off" = remove (shoes, belt, jacket).
What gate is my flight boarding at?
Use this to confirm which gate your flight leaves from.
Is the flight on time?
"On time" means no delay. If it's late, you'll hear "delayed."

Tip: At security you'll hear short commands like "laptops out" (take your laptop out of your bag) and "belt off." You don't need to answer — they're just instructions to keep the line moving.
